Johannesburg - February 2010 - Donkerhoek Quarry, part of Brikor Limited, recently converted from pyrotechnic blasting to electronic delay detonators to achieve optimum safety, enhanced fragmentation and environmental control at its operations in Pretoria East in Gauteng. AEL Mining Services was awarded the full rock-on-ground services contract, which includes managing the drilling contractor and all blasting related operations , as well as the supply of products and accessories. According to Harry Botes, Donkerhoek's general manager, the decision was taken to outsource the entire blasting operation to AEL based on a rand per cubic metre contract. "AEL is one of the leading experts in electronic blasting with a comprehensive understanding of all elements of the blasting operation. It made sense to let them do what they're best at, while we get on with our core business of supplying materials to the civil ,roads, asphalt, metallurgical, building and construction industries", says Botes. Willem du Plessis, regional engineer for Quarry Services for AEL's Northern Region comments, "With the deployment of our latest range of 3G DigiShot electronic initiating systems designed around the quarrying industry, Donkerhoek is able to achieve accurate timing benefits. This high degree of control produces a consistent finer fragmentation suitable to the intrinsic nature of the silica quartzite, as well as for applications for the end user. "As full service providers to Donkerhoek, we are accountable for the total blasting operation, which also includes safety and production. DigiShot's accuracy and robustness enables us to fulfill these commitments efficiently and confidently", concludes Du Plessis.
